EURO 2024: SPAIN CROWNED EUROPEAN CHAMPION AFTER LAST-MINUTE VICTORY OVER ENGLAND

The joy of the Spanish after the opening score in the Euro final, July 14, 2024

Spain snatched a fourth title in a Euro this Sunday, July 14 after a last-minute victory against England (2-1). La Roja becomes the first team to win four European Nations Championships.

Rodri: “Luis de La Fuente deserves this recognition”

Rodri on Spanish TV: “Yes, it’s probably the best day of my sporting life. We’re a family and now we’re the most successful team at the Euros. We talked about previous generations who made history and now we’re the European champions. It’s an incredible day for us. The mentality of this team… many have been European champions at youth level, now at senior level, that’s what stays with us.”

“Luis de La Fuente deserves this recognition by winning the Euro. That’s it, that’s Spain. I ask people to go out into the streets tomorrow and feel proud.”

Kane: “It’s very painful, and it’s going to hurt for a while”

Harry Kane on ITV: “It’s never easy but we’ve shown incredible resilience, character to get here but you have to transform when you can and we haven’t. It’s very painful, and it’s going to hurt for a while. All we can say is thank you to the fans, to those who believed in us, we’ll be back. It’s disappointing we couldn’t win this for Gareth, we wanted to win it for him.”

The joy and pride of Luis de la Fuente

Southgate: “They are the best team in the tournament”

Gareth Southgate on the BBC: “We fought until the last moments of the final. But today we didn’t have enough control of the ball. We defended well, they pressed well and you have to resist that but we did it well. We were always in the game and after the equaliser, the game was still very open. But as always in these games, it’s down to the details. But they are the best team in the tournament. They deserve it.”

“It’s going to take time to recover. Physically, it’s been a difficult period for Harry Kane. He came in a bit short of games and he wasn’t quite at the level we were hoping for. We thought Ollie (Watkins) would bring some freshness so we could press a bit better, that would make us more dangerous.”

And the best player is… Rodri

He has only lost one match (excluding penalties) this season, with Manchester City (in the FA Cup final), and none with Spain. Rodri was voted best player of the tournament, at the end of a final that he was unable to finish, as he was injured and came off at half-time.

Lamine Yamal best youngster of the tournament

17 years and 1 day, four assists and one goal for the Barça winger.
