Award-winning actress Jodi Sta. Maria has shared her reaction to ABS-CBN’s announcement of a significant layoff affecting over 100 employees.
The news, which has sent ripples through the entertainment industry, prompted Jodi to post a simple yet poignant reaction on her X (formerly Twitter) account, calling the development “heartbreaking” and adding a broken heart emoji.
The layoffs are part of a retrenchment program announced by ABS-CBN as it continues to navigate financial challenges within the media industry.
Despite its efforts to diversify into new markets and reduce operating costs, the network is still grappling with the loss of its congressional franchise in 2020, which led to a drastic reduction in its workforce and operations.
Supporters of both Jodi and ABS-CBN flooded her post with sympathy and encouragement. Many echoed her sentiment, with one netizen commenting, “This is so sad as a Kapamilya,” while others expressed concern for the affected employees: “Praying for strength for the entire network and all those impacted.”
Despite the current difficulties, ABS-CBN has reported some positive outcomes in 2024, including rising TV ratings and success in its film division, Star Cinema. Additionally, the network’s music department saw growth, bolstered by the success of acts like girl group BINI.
As the network continues to adjust its operations to the realities of a post-franchise environment, this latest retrenchment is a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by ABS-CBN in its quest for financial stability.
