Darryl Yap to produce film on Pepsi Paloma’s life and controversies

Filmmaker Darryl Yap announced his upcoming movie, ‘The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma,’ which has already ignited heated discussion online.

Set for release in 2025, the film will focus on the life and tragic death of ‘80s actress Pepsi Paloma, who was entangled in one of the country’s most infamous controversies before her untimely death in 1985.

Yap took to Facebook to share details of the project, saying, “Ang aking kababayan na si Pepsi Paloma, Olongapeña, Artista, Biktima. Sa darating na 2025, bago sumapit ang ika-40 anibersayo ng kanyang kontrobersyal na pagpapatiwakal—Kilalanin natin ang Anino, ang Multo, ang Alingasgas ng kanyang Pagkatao. Ang Aking ika-17 Pelikula: THE RAPISTS OF PEPSI PALOMA.”

Yap’s post was accompanied by a black-and-white image of Paloma and her gravestone, cementing the project’s serious tone.

Pepsi Paloma, born Delia Dueñas Smith, became an ‘80s sensation in Philippine cinema. However, her alleged assault by high-profile figures and her death by reported suicide at the age of 18 added a layer of infamy and controversy to her story. Her death, on May 31, 1985, continues to provoke questions surrounding the circumstances of her final years.

The film’s title alone has sparked considerable debate among netizens, with many expressing both interest and concern over Yap’s portrayal of the actress’s life. Comments included a mix of support, apprehension, and criticism.

Currently, Yap has not revealed who will play Paloma, leaving fans speculating on the casting. While ‘The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma’ is intended as a tribute and exploration of her life, Yap’s project has already rekindled longstanding public debates surrounding her death and legacy.
