Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami dealt blow as transfer target signs contract extension with current club

In a massive blow to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, Angel Di Maria has reportedly extended his contract with Benfica till 2025. Di Maria was linked with a move to the Herons, where he would have had the opportunity to reunite with his compatriot Messi.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid man became a free agent after his contract with Benfica expired in June. Before reports of joining Miami, the 36-year-old intended to return to his hometown club Rosario Central. But the move broke down after he received threats to his family from Newell’s Old Boys fans.

Di Maria first joined Benfica in 2007 and left in 2010 before returning last summer on a Bosman transfer. Amid interest from Messi’s Miami, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner chose to renew his contract at Benfica, dashing the Herons hopes of signing him.

Following his contract extension, Di Maria expressed his excitement to extend his stay. He has scored 32 goals and provided 43 assists in 172 appearances for Benfica.

Lionel Messi has been out of action since he was forced out with an ankle injury in the 2024 Copa America final. Inter Maimi’s results since Messi’s departure for the Copa America until now have been quite impressive (W7, L2).

They will continue their defense of the Leagues Cup when they play fellow MLS side Toronto FC in the Round of 32, having ended second in their group comprising Tigres UANL and Club Puebla.

“The club’s medical report came out and the new information is that. Regarding when he could come back, he will be evaluated week by week and we will see what his recovery is like, we won’t be taking any type of risk.”

The Herons are getting used to winning games without Lionel Messi. The Argentine has only played 12 of 25 games for the Herons in 2024, and as per reports, he’s expected to return to action in September.
