Fans blown away by image of 51-year-old Olympic medal winner with ‘no equipment’

Fans can’t get enough of the Olympian.

Fans were left stunned when a 51-year-old Olympian won a medal despite not using the usual equipment.

The Olympic Games gives fans the chance to get excited and invested in sports they’ve never bothered with before.

The two-week celebration of sport can turn anyone into an expert on skateboarding, dressage or any of the other 38 sports taking place.

Incredible individual performances go a long way to capturing the imaginations of spectators, and that certainly happened on Tuesday during the 10-metre air pistol mixed team gold medal match.

Serbian duo Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec took gold, but the real star of the show was Turkey’s Yusuf Dikec.

The 51-year-old went viral because of the extremely casual way he stepped up to the podium and shot his pistol like it was the most unimportant thing in the world.

Dikec, competing in his fifth Olympic Games, took his shots with one hand in his pocked and without wearing any conventional shooting gear.

Most competitors wear protective ear equipment and specialised glasses, but Dikec didn’t seem bothered.

The glasses are usually tinted to help with glare and sight is limited to one eye so athletes don’t have to keep the other eye closed to aim.

Dikec’s unconventional technique clearly worked for him, as he and partner Sevval Ilayda Tarhan claimed the silver medal, Dikec’s first Olympic medal.

It’s fair to say that the Turkish shooter is now one of the internet’s favourite athletes.

One fan on X wrote: “I love how everyone uses specialised lenses for shooting to avoid blur and increase precision. But then Turkey sends out a guy who looks like he just picked up the gun for fun and wins silver.”

Another commented: “This is what you call aura. Looking like he just came out of the crowd and gave it a go … he just casually took home silver at the Olympics.”

“Dude looks like he just decided to join the Olympics when he woke up this morning,” joked a third.

While a fourth added: “He came in with both eyes open and one of his hand in his pocket. That’s a 51 year old man who is here to make a statement and sure he left with something… a silver medal.”
