A recent social media stir has surrounded Philippine Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo and his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, following a viral TikTok post and Carlos’s own repost of the criticism.

The issue began when Angelica shared a post on August 1 highlighting Japanese gymnast Shinnosuke Oka’s victory in another category before Yulo’s gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Her post, accompanied by flexed biceps and rolling eyes emojis, read, “Japan pa din talaga…Lakas,” which seemed to dismiss Yulo’s achievement.

In response, TikTok user @yowksss17 posted a reaction video criticizing Angelica’s comment. The video, which has gained nearly 4.5 million views and over 566,000 reactions, argues that Yulo’s girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, deserves recognition for her support of Yulo despite the lack of support from his family.

The video’s caption stated: “Imagine being there for your boyfriend when his OWN family doesn’t support him. His mother also had the guts to share posts saying ‘Japan pa rin talaga…’ while her son is literally competing too.”

The controversy intensified when Carlos Yulo himself reposted the video, drawing further attention to the family dispute. Netizens reacted strongly to the repost, expressing shock and disappointment.

The repost has exacerbated the public debate about the strained relationship between Yulo and his mother, drawing significant media attention and sparking widespread discussion online.
