Leeds United issue extraordinary statement after Archie Gray’s ‘heartbreaking’ transfer to Tottenham

Archie Gray has completed a permanent move to Tottenham

Leeds United have issued an extraordinary statement following the sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham.

Gray, 18, was thought to be heading to Brentford before Spurs swooped in to hijack the deal earlier this week.

Having enjoyed a fabulous campaign in the Championship, the former Whites star has completed his move for £30m.

But needing to comply with FFP restrictions, Leeds say they were left with no choice in a bold statement published earlier today.

“Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars,” said the club via their official platforms.

“Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations.

“Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism.

“He leaves with the very best wishes for his future career and in the knowledge that Leeds will always be his home.”

Daniel Farke’s side have received something in return with defender Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction.

The Wales international featured heavily after an impressive loan spell at Elland Road last season and has now made his move a permanent one.

As for Gray, it remains to be seen whether he is handed first-team opportunities with Tottenham next season or loaned elsewhere given his age.

“When Spurs came and I had the opportunity to play in the Champions League eventually and the Europa League this year, I couldn’t really say no,” said Gray upon the confirmation of his switch.
