Nico Williams has emerged as one of the standout stars of Euro 2024 with Spain and clubs including Chelsea and Barcelona are now interested in signing him during the summer transfer window

Nico Williams has picked out his preferred club as interest cranks up in the Euro 2024 star.

The Spanish winger has shone over in Germany for his country. He was sensational in the 4-1 victory over Georgia, providing a goal and an assist.

That win was enough to see Spain set up a quarter-final clash with hosts Germany. With Williams sparkling during the tournament, he has seen interest in his services rise.

Chelsea and Liverpool are among the Premier League sides to have been linked with him. As per Spanish outlet Sport, the Blues have even made an approach through an intermediary.

They have however been told that Williams’ preference is Barcelona. Despite that, Chelsea could still make a play for the wideman.

Barcelona might not be able to afford the Athletic Bilbao forward due to their dire financial situation. Chelsea have thus been told to be patient during negotiations.

Williams reportedly has a €55million (£46.5m) release clause written into his contract in Spain, that Chelsea are willing to pay. Enzo Maresca’s side are also open to offering the 21-year-old a signing on fee between €15m (£12.7m) and €20m (£16.9m).

Williams has three years remaining on his contract with Bilbao. He remains focused on the task at hand during the Euros despite growing interest in his services.

Speaking last week, he said: “Everything that comes from outside is good, it means I’m doing my job well. Every kid dreams of being noticed by big clubs.

“I’m focused on doing well at the European Championship and whatever comes after that I’ll find out because these days I’m totally disconnected.”

His current Spain teammate Yamine Lamal has urged him to pursue a move to Barcelona. He said: “We get along very well, and you can see that on the pitch too, that we are very close, that we are very good friends, and that is the most important thing to have the connection on the pitch. I wish Nico could come to Barca.”

Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte has also offered an update on Williams’ future and is sure that he is not looking for a move. As quoted by TribalFootball, he said: “We have impressive talent in the squad.

“When things are like this, it’s normal that there are players who arouse interest, but we’re not here to talk about rumours. Nico is happy in Bilbao and at Athletic and we’re very happy with Nico.

“We don’t worry about or pay attention to rumours. We’re focused on creating an attractive project for all our players, fighting for titles and competing in Europe.”
