The quarter-finals of Copa America 2024 start on Friday following the conclusion of the group stage, and 28 Premier League players are still involved in the competition.

A total of 42 players who were contracted to play in the 2024/25 Premier League went to the tournament, including Douglas Luiz and Brandon Aguilera, who have left Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest respectively and signed for foreign clubs during the Copa America.

There are 28 Premier League players remaining in the tournament, with Argentina and Brazil having the biggest share of them, with eight each.

Some mouthwatering match-ups now lie ahead this weekend.

Friends become foes

On Friday, Argentina meet Ecuador in a repeat of the 2021 quarter-final, and there could be as many as 10 Premier League stars in action.

Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo, representing Ecuador, comes up against his club team-mate Enzo Fernandez. Ecuador have only beaten Argentina five times in 40 previous contests, with their last such success coming in 2015.

On Saturday, Crystal Palace duo Daniel Munoz and Jefferson Lerma will be among five Premier League players set to feature for Colombia against Panama.

Munoz will be hoping to continue his scoring form, having netted his second goal of the tournament in this week’s 1-1 draw with Brazil in the group stage.

There will an intriguing battle between Liverpool team-mates Darwin Nunez and Alisson when Uruguay face Brazil on Sunday.

Nunez had scored in seven consecutive matches for Uruguay prior to the 1-0 midweek win over United States, equalling a national record, and goalkeeper Alisson will now be looking to keep him out.

Both Nunez and Alisson have started every match in the tournament so far, as have Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes, who plays for Newcastle United, and Manchester United’s Uruguay winger Facundo Pellistri.

Who’s gone home early?

While 28 of the 2024/25 Premier League players are looking to reach the final on 14 July, 12 have returned home early.

Jamaica were the first team to bow out, but West Ham United striker Michail Antonio still managed to write himself into the history books by scoring his nation’s first ever goal at Copa America in a 3-1 defeat to Ecuador.
