New footage emerges of the punch that left Angela Carini unable to continue her fight with Imane Khelif

Angela Carini withdrew from the fight after just 46 seconds.

Italian boxer Carini pulled out of her welterweight bout with Khelif after just 46 seconds amid an ongoing row over the Algerian’s eligibility for the Games.

Carini raised her hand in the air to signal her withdrawal from the fight after being hit with two punches, meaning Khelif was declared the winner.

The Telegraph reported that the Italian sustained a suspected broken nose in the opening exchanges, leading to her decision to pull out of the fight.

Khelif’s participation at the Games is controversial, as the Algerian was disqualified from last year’s Boxing World Championships for failing gender eligibility tests.

She was disqualified hours before her gold medal bout at the Championships in New Delhi after she failed to meet the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) eligibility criteria, with the BBC reporting that she failed a testosterone level test.

Reuters reported that IBA president Umar Kremlev told Russian news agency TASS that Khelif and Taiwan’s double world champion Lin Yu-ting, who was also disqualified, had “XY chromosomes”.

The IBA, organisers of the World Championships, is a federation no longer recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Organisers of the boxing at the 2024 Games – The Paris Boxing United (PBU) – approved both Khelif and Yu-ting to compete.

Speaking after the fight, Carini said: “After the second one [blow to the nose] I couldn’t breathe anymore.

“I went to my coach and said ‘enough’ because it takes maturity and courage to stop. I didn’t feel like fighting anymore.”

Her coach said: “I don’t know if her nose is broken. I have to speak with the girl.”

Footage has now emerged of the blow that appeared to inflict the suspected broken nose and caused Carini to pull out of the fight.

The Telegraph’s Oliver Brown reported that the blow left blood on the shorts of Carini.
