Veteran journalist Karen Davila has stirred controversy in the P-pop community after saying that the girl group BINI will open doors for Pinoy pop to be known around the world.
In a recently posted clip from ABS-CBN news program TV Patrol clip in X, Karen talked about the impact of the “Nation’s Girl Group” on P-pop music.
“Tsaka ang maganda do’n, kasi diba ang K-pop sikat sa buong mundo,” the journalist initially said.
“Maganda yung BINI na sila yung magbubukas— ng pintuan para P-pop. ‘Pag sumikat sila, sisikat din yung iba pang Pilipino,” she added.
The newscaster’s statement about the ABS-CBN-produced and managed group, however, did not sit well with some P-pop fans.
In the comment section of the said post, netizens expressed disappointment over Karen’s remarks.
“Are you sure about this, [Karen Davila]? It is a shameful, disrespectful comment coming from a respected TV news personality like you. You should have at least do a little background check. Disgusting,” one comment said.
“Your comment was disappointing. As a journalist, hindi ba you should check your facts first? P-pop is being known globally now because SB19 spearheaded it to what it is now. They are the trailblazers. #fact,” another fan said.
Fans of SB19, in particular, appeared to get heated over the journalist’s statement, and started throwing “facts” on her way.
However, coming into Karen’s defense, one X comment said that the clip shown showed no context of what they were talking about and as to why the newscaster reached that particular conclusion.
Said user posted the entire news clip, showcasing BINI’s interview with the station, talking about how they are opening for other K-pop idols as they will be performing during the KCON LA 2024 preshow.
“Doon sa mga fans na nagagalit kay Ms. Karen at BINI sana alamin niyo po muna pinakabuong context bakit nasabi niya yun,” the poster said.
“They’re talking about the KCON where BINI is performing for [a] PRESHOW, so ibig sabihin niya sa “maganda yung bini na silang magbubukas..” is about KCON,” the user further clarified.
Karen has yet to react nor comment on the issue as of writing.
