Olympic athlete vomits on live TV after being made to swim in polluted river at Paris Games

Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk vomited 10 times after the gruelling race.

Team GB’s Alex Yee won gold in the men’s triathlon event as he produced an incredible comeback on Wednesday.

Yee claimed his second Olympic gold medal with a stunning performance on the final lap of the men’s race in the sweltering Paris heat.

Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk finished in ninth place and the physically taxing event took its toll on him after the conclusion of the race.

He was seen vomiting on live TV after he was forced to swim through the polluted River Seine, which has been subjected to intense criticism due to its conditions.

Speaking after the race, Mislawchuk said: “I didn’t come here to come top 10 but I gave it everything I had.”

He added: “I went for it, I have no regrets – vomited 10 times.”

Before Wednesday’s triathlon, organisers said the men’s and women’s event only had 60 per cent chance of going ahead because the water in the River Seine was not clean enough.

Tests of the River Seine in the early hours of Tuesday morning revealed the water was not clean enough for the race to take place.

Belgium’s Marten van Riel said triathletes had been treated like ‘puppets in a puppet show’.

On Instagram, he wrote: “If the priority was the health of the athletes this event would have been moved to another location a long time ago.”

The race ended up taking place on Wednesday as Yee pipped New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde to take gold.
